After enquiring about playing Liverpool in a game, Paul and Andy from Liverpool SFA set up the Sovini Cup, and invited lots of other districts to participate. It was fantastic to play districts we do not normally play against.
We started slowly though the first two losses weren’t exactly deserved. Though Liverpool scored (from a corner), they did not have that many chances in the game and Max had a couple of shots which were well saved by the Liverpool ‘keeper. 1-0
The Sheffield game was less close in reality, where they scored an early goal and dominated the rest of the game. They scored a second with the last kick of the game to a harsh penalty decision. 0-2
We knew that we needed to bounce back with a win in our last game. We did with a dominating performance against a physical Hambleton team. We took the lead when Max scored directly from a free kick. A great strike. A second wasn’t too far away when Fabio was put through and hit a fabulous left foot shot with the outside of his foot to make it two. We then scored with the last kick of the game, when Jack put an amazing ball into the box and the ‘keeper pushed the ball into Billy, who gambled and bundled the ball into the net. 3-0 and a great performance meaning we finished third in the group. We needed to play Bradford next in the ‘plate’ competition.
The game against Bradford was our best performance of the day by far. Bradford really struggled throughout and we were first to every ball. Fabio was set through and hit a shot which the goalkeeper saved into his defender and the ball trickled over the line. Our second was another Fabio solo effort, where he smashed it into the net, giving the Bradford goalkeeper no chance. A Jack assist for Max was our next goal. An excellent team goal. Our fourth goal was when we won the ball high up the pitch and Rohi beat three players to smash the ball into the top corner. 4-0 to Wolves and we had to play the winner of Telford or Hambleton in the last game.
It was Hambleton who beat Telford and the game was much closer than the last game against them, with very few chances between both sides. In fact, the game went to penalties, which we were very unlucky to lose.
It didn’t matter though and all the boys enjoyed the day. Special mention to Prem and Fabio, who were nominated by the opposition managers as the best player on our team in certain games. With the most nominations, Andre was awarded player of the tournament for Wolverhampton and was given a trophy.
Thank you to all parents and players for travelling to Liverpool for the day. It was very enjoyable to spend the day with some amazing lads and truly supportive parents. We couldn’t do this without you!
