November 10th 2024. U14 Girls fight back to grab a draw.

Updated: Nov 16

Wolverhampton travelled to East Riding and started this Champions Cup encounter on the front foot. They certainly hadn't made this long journey for nothing, and furthermore they were determined to show that they were far better than their two previous defeats in this competition would suggest. Our opponents were equally up for the fight, however, and it soon became very apparent that neither side were prepared to give an inch. Indeed the pattern was set when East Riding kicked the ball away before we were able to take a free kick and the referee had to intervene on more than one occasion as the game became increasingly more feisty. The play was also very scrappy at times but Wolverhampton appeared to be well in control until two defensive lapses allowed the home side to take a 2-0 lead against the run of play.

It would have been easy for our girls to feel sorry for themselves but they hit back quickly with Lexi Ruby getting her first goal of the season. This was so well deserved after her nightmare injury hit spell and this well taken header not only got us back into the game but also turned the momentum in our favour. We were able to increase the pressure on our opponents goal with Kornelia sweeping up and collecting any loose balls which came around her box and it was evident that our opportunity would come if we just remained patient. Eventually the equalizer did arrive as a result of another great run from Lexi Ruby and it was well deserved. The keeper came, but fumbled, allowing our ace poacher to show great composure in finding the target and from that point onwards we pressed on for the winner that never came. This was a real test of character, and our girls emerged from a game remembered more for its fouls and fiery moments rather than great play, with immense credit. They showed class to keep going, despite all the antics that came their way and emerged with a decent result and with their heads held high. Looking forward to our next game at home to Sheffield.

Squad: Kornelia, Scarlett, Caitlin, Erin, Esme, Tayne, Sarannah, Xienna, Dhemi, Lexi (Ruby), Savannah, Faith, Remi
