March 23rd 2024. Primary Boys set Chris Smith Cup alight.

Updated: Mar 24

Wolverhampton Primary Boys made a great start to the annual Chris Smith Cup competition by winning their group after remaining unbeaten over 6 games. They can now look forward to a Cup Final in May, hosted by Aston Villa FC.The 2-0 victory over Sutton Coldfield set the tone and Claudiu got the morning started by netting, after good work from Evan and Rory, and our second goal was created and expertly finished by Joel. The next game was much closer than it needed to be because East Birmingham scored late on after another scorcher from Joel, and a Rory Butler special, appeared to have set us up for a comfortable victory. As usual South Birmingham proved to be our sternest test and things weren't looking good when our opponents took the lead with a shot from distance that gave Lucas Durnall in the Wolverhampton goal no chance but our persistence finally paid off with a goal from Rory whose left foot shot found the bottom corner of the net. The 1-1 draw set us up nicely for our final two fixtures and the 4-1 victory over Erdington was probably our best group performance. Claudiu and Rory both scored a brace but Evan Lawrence was everywhere and instrumental in two of them.

The lads knew a win in our final match would be sufficient to take us into the semi final and that victory was never in doubt once a long pass from Armandas had found Aarav in space and he was never going to miss the target when through on goal.Evan got the second, after beating his markers, and Joel completed the 3-0 win after using his electric pace to burst through and beat the advancing keeper.Only East Birmingham now stood between us and a place in the final. Although we had already beaten them in the group game, semi finals are notoriously nervy affairs and there were chances at both ends before Mason's well struck shot nestled in the bottom corner of the goal. Rory got the second, after receiving a short pass from Joel, to effectively kill the game and Evan's late effort was the icing on the cake. Another emphatic performance from our U11 Boys' team and a great morning's football at Brookvale. Thanks again to organisers BPSFA, Phil Hynan and Chris Smith for their hard work..

Squad: Lucas Durnall, Armandas Jolke, Kai Cole, Theo Wood, Nico Dunstan Grey, Charlie Durnall, Claudiu Flore, Mason Dhillon, Joel Badu, Evan Lawrence, Rory Butler, Tailon Simpson Taylor, Aarav Wilkhoo.
