Wolverhampton began the New Year against Aston in a very positive mood and had lots of possession in the early stages without creating too many clear cut chances before our opponents took the lead after ten minutes with practically their first shot on target. It was typical of our luck this season to concede just when we were building up some momentum but we picked ourselves up and hit back almost immediately with a fine equaliser. An outstanding pass from Darcy on the left wing sending Zach clear and his confident finish was a great reward for all our efforts. The game was now finely balanced at 1-1 but Aston had a good chance to take the lead and we were fortunate to see a seemingly goal bound effort come back off our post before we broke the deadlock ourselves two minutes before half time.
Zach won the ball off a defender and netted to make the score 2-1 in our favour and just when it looked as though we would go into the break ahead, slack defending on our part allowed Aston to restore parity once again and for some unknown reason we were never able to recover from this blow. What had been a keenly contested first half battle between two well matched sides became a second half disaster from our point of view and Aston scored four goals without reply to eventually run out comfortable 6-2 winners. Our opponents are to be congratulated on their clinical finishing and approach play once they had grown into the game, but at times we made it far too easy for them and we looked a well beaten side long before the final whistle.
