April 4th 2025. Girls finish 2nd in Her Game Too Cup.

Updated: Apr 6

Another excellent Friday evening for the Wolverhampton u11 girls who eventually finished runners up in the Her Game Too Cup after failing to win any of their first three games. We lost 1-0 to Walsall in a closely contested opening game and followed this with a goalless draw against Cannock after clearly having the edge throughout.Rosie Smith had lots of attempts on the Cannock goal but it appeared to have a charmed life and the ball just wouldn't go into the net.

The final one of the trio against North Shropshire, however, was just the opposite and despite an heroic effort we did well to limit the side who had won most of the competitions this season to a 2-0 margin of victory. After such a difficult start lesser teams would have buckled but the Wolverhampton girls suddenly found their feet and the 4-0 victory over East Birmingham proved to be the turning point.

Layla Dolman crossed for Rosie to score the opener with a great one touch finish and after

Layla and Megan had gone close Olivia scored her first goal for Wolverhampton to effectively clinch the points. Nevertheless, the girls were really in the mood now and Megan passed the ball to Layla for the 3rd goal and Layla and Rosie combined well again to complete the scoring.

Our next game against Aston proved to be much closer though and it was won by an amazing goal from Rosie who seemed to have been waiting for this moment all evening. Layla's corner found Rosie at the far post and before anyone else had time to blink Rosie's first time half volley had landed in the back of the net. The 0-0 draw against Erdington, which followed, brought us down to earth somewhat but it served to show the defensive side of our game.Poppy was called upon a few times in this game but she proved to be in outstanding form as usual and with our debutant Haro Young and Amber creating an effective barrier in front of her, we seldom looked in any danger of conceding a goal. The same was true of our final game against Kings Norton but once again goals were at a premium and it was Rosie who came up with that decisive goal as she ran from the byline and beat a couple of defenders before beating the keeper from the tightest of angles.

Squad: Poppy Gretton (GK), Amber Bains (Newbridge), Haro Young (Elston Hall), Rosie Smith (Springdale), Megan Winwood (Uplands), Clara Case (St. Michael's) , Layla Dolman (Perry Hall),

Olivia Wright (Woodthorne),
