It was great to kick off the new season with a McGregor Cup quarter final game at Aston Villa’s Brookvale Dome this morning. Wolverhampton u10’s were all experiencing district schools' football for the first time and during the initial stages Aston, who are always guaranteed to provide stern opposition, looked the more likely to score. Our lads weathered the storm though and soon found their feet, with Ollie's shot midway through the first half just failing to hit the target. Jakson in the Wolverhampton goal was kept very busy of course but he always appeared confident and handled everything that came his way. Nihaal and Charlie also defended well and indeed the whole team grew in confidence as the game progressed and we eventually took the lead after a great run down the right hand side by Lucas was followed by a brilliant low cross that Corban met at the far post. With such a slender lead at the break the match was far from over, however, and the second half was just as competitive as the first with chances dropping to both sides at regular intervals.
Corban had two great opportunities, only to be twarted at the death, but without some timely interventions from Charlie, Nihaal and our midfielders, notably Uthman, who were always prepared to drop back, Aston would undoubtedly have pulled level at this point. Indeed it was shortly after a magnificent double save from Jakson that we virtually sealed the win. Lucas taking advantage of a poor clearance by the Aston keeper to run clear and smash the ball into the net. Alhaji, who was having a great game in midfield with his ability to run at defenders, could have made it 3-0 but his shot unfortunately just went wide. Nevetheless, a good game between two fine district teams and an impressive start for this new Wolverhampton team who have the potential to do very well this season. As a result of this win we will face Kings Norton
on Saturday 21st September in the semi final.
